Have you ever noticed how so many of our holiday traditions center around food? Those traditions we begin when our children are small, or perhaps when we first get married and begin to develop our own traditions often stick with us throughout life. Christmas foods are diverse with each family, but we often hold on to those so dearly that a holiday without them seems as if something has been left out. Christmas Eve dinner when I was growing up always consisted of my mother's Christmas Stew. That is ironic, because my mother, who grew up on a cattle ranch in eastern Colorado, didn't like vegetables and was always more apt to serve a nice cut of beef for special occasions. Nonetheless, for years after we were married, Marie's Christmas Stew was our meal of choice. Our daughter who married into a very Italian family was surprised to learn that pasta was her husband's go to holiday meal.
Christmas cookies, candy and Coffee cakes are some of the things we look forward to. My sister's Almond Roca is always part of our holiday table, and she has, fortunately, taught the fine details of candy making to her daughter.
Whether you celebrate with a Crown Roast, Lasagna or a Christmas Stew, may the real reason for Christmas, the birth of Jesus, be the center of your celebration.
Merry Christmas from our house to yours.
